Recently, I decided to learn some data science skills. While practicing algorithms and coding using some rather boring datasets, I realized that I had been keeping a log of Discovery’s SPOT satellite tracking data since it set sail from France. So fast-forward through lots of COVID lock-down induced screen-time and you get this new program that processes the boat’s movement into a SQL database, recording time and location coordinate data for Discovery, and then breaks all the tracking data into trips by calculating whenever the boat leaves and returns to Compass Point based on a geo-fence around the marina. So now I can see whenever it is out on a charter and check out all the cool anchorages they explored!
Here’s some recent trips:
Wasn’t sure how it was going to react to our trip in 2019 where we sailed it back to the states to have some Volvo recall work and a new generator installed. But as you can see by the last entry in the table, nailed it!
It’s a significant upgrade from the previous Where’s the Boat page I made a few years ago.
